The role will head the Retail Sector business within LGIMRA, developing innovative and commercially deliverable strategies to maintain, enhance and reshape the LGIM retail portfolio.

The successful candidate is likely to come from a leading edge retail environment. They will have ideas and vision, a highly strategic approach and a proven

background of commercial success. A key aspect will be to address the opportunities and threats technology presents and be able to straddle retail, technology, the consumer experience and real estate. They are not expected to come from a traditional surveying background.

 

This role will not need to have direct management responsibility for the buildings or the management of the shopping centres, which will continue to be undertaken by the Fund and Asset Managers. The successful individual will require a collaborative approach to inspire the current retail team. The candidate must have the profile, experience, and gravitas and, critically, be engaging open and clear thinking with excellent all round communication skills to engage with and manage all stakeholders.

The candidate will work across funds to identify new ideas and opportunities to improve occupier experience, LGIM performance and asset value.

The candidate must be appreciative of the importance of retail in Britain’s towns and cities in fostering and supporting social cohesion. This will include a genuine engagement with and practical application of social sustainability recognising the need for diversity, social cohesion, quality of life, safety and security, equitable opportunities and outcomes. The candidate must be pragmatic in their application of social sustainability working a careful balance that fulfils social outcomes whilst continuing to deliver target investment returns.

Strategy - Identify areas of innovation, change and opportunity and engage with Fund Managers and Directors to provide strategic direction

Innovation - Champion new ideas, providers in the market and skills which will support long term strategy

Create & Share 5 Year Sector Plan

Asset Manager Development - Provide a focus for team excellence and develop the sector specialist team, elevating visibility and impact

Occupier Focus - Promote active engagement with customer-occupiers

Strategic Occupier Engagement - Use increased knowledge of customers/ building users/ visitors and local knowledge to help inform investment decisions

Trends - Provide a flow of intelligence on trends to inform investment decisions, in particular the impact of technology on customer-occupier and customer-visitor habits.

Customer:

EQi: Demonstrate personal resilience, tenacity, flexibility and empathy: the ability to respond positive and proactively to each customer occupier style, approach, expectations and needs

Strategic thinking: A highly strategic approach to the sector, an awareness of how to harness technology and able to motivate and inspire people to breath fresh life into Retail within L&G

Maximising relationships: Demonstrate the ability to build positive relationships with key stakeholders, partners and customer occupiers at Property Director/ Chief Financial Officer level in occupier organisations

Deep retail experience: With an appreciation of the dynamics and drivers across all aspects of the retail sector from Value Retail to High-end Retail

People:

Adaptability: Demonstrate flexible/agile thinking & working with internal teams, Fund Managers and senior management

Stakeholder Management & Collaboration: Using data and information influence a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to take action.

Commercial (Performance):

Critical & Strategic thinking: identify opportunities and threats (short/ medium/ long term) at sector level. Work with Asset Managers to deliver occupier engagement plans and enhance strategic relationships

Performance: Use data to demonstrate value of sector planning and occupier engagement approach with increased retention.

Process:

Work Management: Undertake goal-setting, planning, preparation, prioritisation and time management in order to complete projects and hit relevant deadlines

IT & Data Skills - Highly IT literate with demonstrable track record in using data analysis, business intelligence and visualisation tools

People skills – particularly in communications and building relationships, and in ensuring diversity and inclusion, teamwork and collaboration

Innovation & Creativity – this role will be expected to support new ideas from the team and help scale them to have LGIM & wider industry impact
