The Head of Test Engineering will work at a leadership level, responsible for all test capabilities and guidance throughout the Engineering Team as we progress on our digital Agile transformation journey. The Head of Test Engineering will define and oversee test strategy and best practice for both manual and automated testing, and will lead the introduction of new dynamic technology initiatives. This will include strategically advising on environments, tooling, approaches and technologies.

The Head of Test Engineering will be part of the Platform Engineering Team and work closely with senior business stakeholders, feature teams and the Platform/DevOps teams whilst managing a distributed test team. Due to the nature of the business the landscape is rapidly changing so adaptability, communication and influencing skills are essential.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Define and oversee the overarching test strategy and best practices that will help drive a move to a more modern testing approach to support our continued Agile digital transformation
  • Product and roadmap ownership of a Platform aligned test automation framework; following an inner-source approach to support the creation of new features and capability
  • Mentoring and management of a team of QA and test engineers
  • Evangelising the benefits of Agile, test automation and CI/CD
  • Encouraging collaboration throughout the testing community to help drive consistency

Experience:

  • Experience defining QA strategy, approach and execution for both manual and automated testing on development initiatives
  • Strong technical skills, both functional and non-functional; manual and automation testing
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment
  • Proven track record of leading, directing and mentoring QA teams and team members
  • Track record of building comprehensive test automation frameworks from scratch
  • Experience in high level test automation design and implementation, including unit, end-to-end, regression and load testing scenarios
  • In depth coding and framework experience, with languages such as Java, .NET, Python etc.
  • A sound knowledge of market leading test automation tools, such as Cucumber, SOAtest, SoapUI, Selenium WebDriver, etc.
  • Back-end test automation experience testing APIs, Microservices and Cloud solutions
  • DevOps and Continuous Integration experience (CI/CD) using market leading tools such as Jenkins, Maven, Git etc.
  • High level knowledge of technical architecture relating to distributed and critical systems
  • Experience implementing automated testing for heritage applications

Specialist knowledge/skills:

  • Experience with a range of technologies - including
    • Microservices and API
    • Modern UI stacks such as Angular, JavaFX and HTML5
    • Modern enterprise application integration middleware, such as Apache Camel
    • Relational databases in OLTP and data warehousing environments
  • In addition it would be a plus to have exposure to:
    • NoSQL databases (ideally, PostgresSQL, InterSystems Caché
    • Kubernetes and Docker based container platforms (ideally Openshift)
    • Hadoop based data platform and ecosystem (ideally Cloudera)
