The Platform Lead is expected to help establish and lead a team of skilled Platform (DevOps and DataOps) Engineers, focusing on the implementation of DevOps and SRE as enablers across LGIM to increase the velocity and efficiency of change and innovation

LGIM is establishing a new Platform team within its IT department in order to fulfil its ambition to create an engaging and efficient experience for internal staff, clients and customers embracing web, mobile, and traditional IT systems. The team will become an important part of the transformation journey that the company is going through and which is sponsored and supported all way up to the board of directors.

The Platform Lead is expected to help establish and lead a team of skilled Platform (DevOps and DataOps) Engineers, focusing on the implementation of DevOps and SRE as enablers across LGIM to increase the velocity and efficiency of change and innovation. The role will also require extensive knowledge transfer and coaching to build a culture of DevOps and industry best practices across the organisation.

The team will work closely with senior stakeholders, feature teams and other members of the Engineering team.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Help build and lead a team of skilled Platform (DevOps and DataOps) Engineers, and create a set of measures to assure quality and control of engineering capability and performance
  • Lead the design and implementation of platform technologies such as service mesh, API gateway, serverless (FaaS) and others to support our emerging container, microservice and cloud-based applications
  • Continue to build out our self-service container and data analytics platform through upgrades and enhancements
  • Define and manage the technology roadmap with deliverables focusing on the continued improvement of the supported solutions and empowering a DevOps culture
  • Drive and manage the platform feature roadmap through collaboration with customers; promoting an inner-source approach to support the creation of new features and capability
  • Contribute to the design, build and operational management of a highly scalable, secure and available platform, ensuring that it is able to operate 24x7
  • Ensure that the platform can scale rapidly to support growth in transaction volumes during periods of peak business
  • Design and build the platform with the highest levels of security. Respond swiftly to new and emerging security threats and vulnerabilities
  • Create tools and automated workflow capabilities to enable software engineers to test and promote code across the different environments and into production with maximum velocity
  • Work to reduce or remove bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the platform ecosystem
  • In collaboration with other members of Engineering, work to reduce or eliminate manual or repetitive tasks, improving the end-to-end health and performance of the platform ecosystem
  • Work with Engineering on solution design, capacity planning and performance
  • Provide support to the software engineering teams to enable the migration of services through to transition from non-production environments into live
  • Evangelise the capabilities provided by the platform; developing education and on-boarding processes to enable customer self-service
  • Take ownership of the platform shared services, such as ElasticSearch, Prometheus and others, which provide critical functionality for applications and operations
  • Take ownership of the build tools estate, such as Jenkins, Nexus and others, which provide the critical functionality for scrum teams to deliver change
  • Work with scrum, operations and security teams on building the platform for exciting new initiatives such as the Enterprise Data Zone (EDZ), distributed ledger (block chain) and more

Experience:

  • The candidate must be able to identify and resolve issues that are creating inefficiencies or hindering progress proactively.

Specialist knowledge/skills:

  • Experience leading and inspiring a team
  • Experience with a programming language such as Java, Python, Groovy, Bash, Golang etc.
  • Understanding of software engineering and distributed systems fundamentals
  • Experience designing and implementing cloud-based infrastructure supporting agile development processes
  • Working knowledge of modern infrastructure automation technology stacks and the ability to identify the best tool for the task
  • Experience working within large regulated organisations with complex projects and technology governance structures
  • Openness for knowledge transfer; willingness to coach others and help them to learn
  • Practical understanding of Docker and Kubernetes, ideally Red Hat Openshift
  • Understanding of Hadoop and associated ecosystem
