This is a hybrid manager / engineering role with significant emphasis on solution design, platform ownership, governance and driving innovation. The individual will manage developers who work as part of cross-functional agile project teams.

This highly technical and business aware individual will be responsible for design, development, implementation and maintenance of reporting data warehouses and ETL processes at LGIM. Notable platforms are ARC, a strategic data repository and data mart to support investment risk, portfolio credit risk and regulatory reporting, as well as CBOR, our book of records for external client reporting. All ETL processes surrounding these platforms as well as generally within the Client Reporting and Distribution area are within the remit of this role.

Planning

  • Provide or review high level estimates, ensuring a consistent and repeatable approach across platforms. Explain estimates in the context of the business initiative as well as the technical context. Monitor estimation vs. actual effort across teams, identify and address inconsistencies.

  • Ensure platforms teams are sized according to the current and impending pipeline build demands. Plan platform releases in conjunction with scrum masters, platform leads and production services

Build

  • Oversee technical design of platform solution
  • Ensure on-going oversight of code development
  • Ensure comprehensive automated integration and regression tests are created
  • Ensure continuous integration of builds, tests and environment transfers
  • Ensure non-functional requirements are understood, tracked and adhered to

BAU

  • Ensure management of transition into production including provision of adequate technical documentation for production support and, where applicable, agreed warranty periods

Best Practice

  • Ensure definition and maintenance of the guidelines for development best practice within the assigned areas
  • Ensure oversight and enforcement of code quality standards for all development activities
  • Ensure visibility and access to best practice documentation
  • Compare the development processes used across different platforms and identify any improvements. Where there are obvious gaps (e.g. lack of code reviews), enhance existing or introduce additional processes / tools)

Team Leadership

  • Skills / capability assessment of existing technical resources, including training recommendations
  • Setting of targets / objectives which provide a focus for delivery; aid in professional development; attracting and nurturing talent
  • Foster a team ownership view of the platform and a general level of understanding of its business usage
  • Ensure technical, business and component knowledge is spread across the team to avoid knowledge silos
  • Be involved in and contribute to cross-team knowledge sharing forums
  • Motivate the development teams to constantly review the way that they operate and to look for improvements e.g. identify wasted effort and recurring issues, and find ways of reducing these. Strive to create high performing technically excellent teams.
  • Proven track record of building robust and scalable enterprise applications
    Seeking automation in preference to repetition
  • Track record of pragmatism i.e. delivering business benefit over technology theory
    Able to interpret and articulate business needs and demonstrate competency in providing business solutions.
  • Understanding of Agile project methodologies (e.g. Scrum, Kanban, Safe)
    Excellent English communication skills, adapts communication style for junior engineers, senior engineers and senior management alike
