The Pension Scheme Manager role is based within LGIM’s risk and compliance function. The role holder will manage the day-to-day activity in relation to the Legal & General Mastertrust and Independent Governance Committee (IGC), reporting through a dotted line to the Chairman of the Mastertrust & IGC. The role holder will work with the business to implement the Trustees’ / IGC’s pension strategies, ensuring that the scheme operates effectively, to required performance standards, and develops over time to maintain its leading market position.

The Legal & General Mastertrust is one of the largest and fastest growing master trusts.  Launched in 2011, the Legal & General Mastertrust has £4.1billion in assets under management with over 680,000 members. The Independent Governance Committee (IGC) oversees the workplace and mature savings pension schemes operated by Legal & General and acts in the interest of members. Legal & General manages £18.8bn in such schemes.’

  • Represent the Trustees and IGC inside Legal & General and externally. Manage the relationship and act as the interface between the Trustees, external employers and L&G
  • Work with the Secretary to the Trustees and IGC to ensure the governance is of the highest possible standard
  • Ensure that the governance structure is appropriate for a scheme of its size, stage of development, evolves with pension developments and reflects the diversity of the participants
  • Implement and lead governance procedures and produce robust Management Information to ensure that the Trustees / IGC can monitor the running of the pension scheme(s)
  • Ensure that delegated authorities are accurately recorded through terms of reference for all committees. Attend each Committee meeting and ensure that the reporting procedures back to the Board are in writing and all follow up actions are completed on schedule.
  • Support the Trustees / IGC to help them comply with their legal and regulatory requirements for the pension schemes.
  • Design, consult and implement the Mastertrust Trustees pension and investment strategies, managing pension scheme performance standards and ensuring that the pension scheme maintains its market leading position
  • Proactively drive and increase member engagement within the Mastertrust, seeking member feedback and utilising social media to help achieve this
  • Represent the Trustees / IGC externally with pensions industry representatives, the Pensions Regulator and the Department of Work & Pensions
  • Monitor and input into regulatory change and general developments and innovations in UK pension provision.

Knowledge

  • Detailed knowledge of UK defined contribution (DC) pension scheme landscape and history and the different legislative structures of trust and contract schemes
  • Deep understanding of employer requirements and their implications across Legal & General
  • Knowledge of key regulatory obligations and strategies
  • A ‘sound’ working knowledge and understanding of bundled and unbundled operating & administration DC models
  • Awareness of main political parties’ pension policies and the legislative process, key competitor propositions
  • Understanding of pooled investment structures.

Experience

  • Pension scheme management at a senior level, preferably gained in house (e.g. Trust based, Insurance Provider) or within an employer benefit consultancy
