To provide legal assistance on a wide range of legal and regulatory issues that may affect the

business of Legal & General Investment Management and the limited companies forming

part of that business.

To provide legal advice on the legal and regulatory issues which arise in the course of LGIM’s investment management activities including:

  • advising on and negotiating investment management agreements for institutional investors such as pension schemes and investment funds, both domestic and international;
  • reviewing, negotiating and advising on distribution agreements and other legal agreements including broker documentation (broker terms, custody agreements, PB agreements, stock lending agreements);
  • negotiation of ISDA master agreements, credit support annexes and GMRAs for a variety of different entity types (including pension funds, insurance companies, SWFs, UCITS, SICAV))
  • advising all departments (e.g. fund managers, operations, finance and sales) on the legal risks arising in the business and recommending appropriate courses of action and  strategies to manage those risks;
  • contributing to ongoing projects within the department and  other ad hoc projects related to regulatory and/or policy change across the business;
  • monitoring legal developments and other events which are likely to have legal implications for the LGIM business and assisting in developing strategies for LGIM companies to adopt in light of them.

The ideal candidate would be an experience PQE solicitor currently working as an in-house lawyer within a financial services/asset management organisation or as a private practice lawyer with a background in financial services/funds/asset management.

Other candidates may be considered (e.g. corporate or commercial lawyers) provided they can show commitment to becoming a financial services lawyer and are quick to learn.

Essential

  • Excellent academic background including 2:1 Degree
  • Current Practising Certificate in England & Wales or similar jurisdiction
  • Gravitas, common-sense, interpersonal and communication skills to communicate in an effective and persuasive manner
  • Comfortable dealing at all levels of personnel within the organisation (including senior management)
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic with an ability to work autonomously
  • Confident negotiating terms with clients/their external counsel
  • Commercial acumen/ability to assess legal risk
  • Team-player with a willingness to pitch in with general day-to-day queries to support the wider team

Desirable

  • Experience negotiating investment management agreements
  • Experience negotiating ISDA master agreements, credit support annexes and GMRAs
  • A basic understanding of financial services regulation
  • Experience of international work

LGIM Legal assists the LGIM business in its strategic aims whilst effectively managing legal risk in light of the overall appetite for it, and as is appropriate for FCA and PRA authorised and regulated firms. The team operates separately from the wider L&G Group legal function (headed up by Geoffrey Timms, L&G Group General Counsel), although close links are maintained with legal team members in other parts of the group.
